Philippines time zone overlap with the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong

In short

The Philippines is UTC+8 and does not observe daylight saving, so the offset to your market shifts twice a year even though Philippine time does not move. Singapore and Hong Kong are identical hours. Australia and New Zealand overlap comfortably. The UK gets a workable afternoon overlap. Most of the US requires either an early start in Manila or a night shift, and night work carries a statutory pay premium.

Time zone is the constraint founders underestimate most, because it is easy to solve for the first month and expensive to sustain for the third year. The arithmetic is simple. The consequences for pay, retention and how you structure work are not.

The baseline

Philippine Standard Time is UTC+8 all year. There is no daylight saving.

That last point matters more than it sounds. Your offset to the Philippines changes twice a year because your clocks move, not theirs. A schedule that works in January drifts by an hour in July, and teams that hard code meeting times discover it the hard way.

Singapore and Hong Kong

Both are UTC+8. Identical hours, no offset, no adjustment.

For companies headquartered in either market, a Philippine hire works your standard business day with no accommodation at all. This is the simplest case and it is why the Philippines is a common first regional hire for Singapore and Hong Kong based companies.

Australia and New Zealand

Australian eastern time runs 2 hours ahead of Manila in winter and 3 hours ahead during daylight saving. Western Australia is identical at UTC+8. New Zealand runs 4 to 5 hours ahead.

Practically, a standard Manila day of 9am to 6pm overlaps with most of a Sydney day. New Zealand loses the early morning but keeps a solid afternoon overlap. Neither requires unusual hours, which is why Australian and New Zealand companies tend to find Philippine hires operationally straightforward.

United Kingdom

The UK sits 7 hours behind Manila in British Summer Time and 8 hours behind in winter.

A Manila day of 9am to 6pm gives the UK an overlap from roughly 2am to 11am UK time in summer. The workable window is the UK morning against the Manila afternoon and evening. Shifting the Manila start later, say 11am to 8pm, produces a comfortable 4 to 5 hour overlap with the UK working day without anyone working nights.

United States

This is where it gets real. Manila is 12 to 13 hours ahead of US eastern time and 15 to 16 hours ahead of Pacific.

There is no arrangement in which both sides keep standard hours. Your options are:

An early Manila start, roughly 6am to 3pm, which reaches the US east coast evening. Limited overlap, no night work.
A Manila evening shift, roughly 6pm to 3am, which covers the US business day properly. This is night work.
Asynchronous working, with a short scheduled overlap for the things that genuinely need to be live.

Most US companies eventually land on the third with a fixed daily overlap window, because it is the only one that survives contact with people's lives.

Night differential is not optional

Work performed between 10pm and 6am attracts a night shift differential of not less than 10 percent of the regular wage for each hour worked in that window, under the Labor Code.

This is a statutory premium, not a market convention, and it is owed regardless of whether the employee agreed to the shift or prefers it. Budget for it at the point you decide the schedule, not when the first payroll run surprises you.

Overtime, rest day and holiday premiums sit on top of this and are calculated separately.

What actually determines whether it holds

The failure mode is not the first month. It is month 18, when a senior person on a permanent night shift starts interviewing elsewhere.

What holds up over time:

Fix the overlap window and keep it narrow. 3 hours of guaranteed overlap used well beats 8 hours of availability.
Write decisions down. If a decision only exists in a call, the person outside that call is permanently behind.
Rotate the inconvenience. If every recurring meeting sits at 11pm Manila time, you have made a choice about who absorbs the cost.
Pay the premium properly and say so. Night differential handled correctly is a retention asset. Handled quietly it becomes a grievance.

Time zone is a design decision, not a constraint you discover. Decide the shift before you write the job description, because it changes who applies.
